Created in 1897 by Winslow Homer (1836–1910), a paramount master of American Realism, this dynamic watercolor is preserved in the permanent collection of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Executed on heavy wove paper with graphite underdrawing and fluid transparent watercolor washes, the balanced horizontal work measures approximately 35.6 cm in height by 53.3 cm in width.

Homer masterfully captured the violent kinetic force of churning rapids and the rugged mass of the riverbank by pairing the classic reserve technique with wet-on-wet saturation and delicate pigment scraping. The surging white foam of the cataracts and the pale flank of the birchbark canoe were achieved without opaque gouache, leaving the untouched paper base to glow with ambient light.
