고노 바이레이

토리이와 등롱

메이지 시대 교토 화단을 이끈 저명한 화가 고노 바이레이가 전통적인 자연의 풍경을 섬세한 필치로 담아낸 채색 목판화 작품이다. 화면을 채우는 짙은 먹선의 결속력과 은은한 녹색의 조화는 마음의 소음을 잦아들게 하며 차분한 정서적 안정을 이끌어낸다.

이 목판화는 일본의 전통적인 미학인 소박하고 조용한 아름다움을 널리 알리고자 기획된 예술 화보집인 楳嶺画鑑 (바이레이 화감)에 수록된 작품으로 제작되었다. 당시 대중적인 미술 교육과 전통 공예의 디자인 지침을 위해 출간된 이 화보집은, 장인들의 엄격한 수작업 공정을 통해 완성되어 오늘날까지 높은 역사적 예술적 가치를 지닌다.

A polychrome woodblock print by Kōno Bairei—a prominent artist who led the Kyoto art scene during the Meiji period—this work exquisitely captures traditional natural scenery with delicate brushwork. This print was produced for inclusion in Bairei Gakan (Bairei Art Album), an artistic anthology designed to introduce and promote wabi-sabi—the traditional Japanese aesthetic of simple, understated beauty. Published at the time to serve as a guide for popular art education and traditional craft design, the album was completed through rigorous handcrafted processes by master artisans, maintaining immense historical and artistic value to this day.
