Completed in 1896 by Winslow Homer (1836–1910), a paramount titan of American Realism and marine art, this iconic oil masterwork is preserved in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Rendered in oil on canvas, the piece measures approximately 76.2 cm in height by 101.6 cm in width.

Homer masterfully captured the visceral collision of the North Atlantic surf detonating against the rocky shore through dense, sculptural impasto and decisive brushwork. The towering plume of white foam erupting on the left was built with heavy, textured layers of lead white and pearlescent grays, imparting immense physical mass to the spray.
