In the late fifteenth century, as the biting alpine winds pierced through the cracks of a remote workshop in Tyrol, Michael Pacher faced the panels of this grand altarpiece while warming his frozen hands with his breath. Grappling intensely to infuse the heavy traditions of Northern Gothic art with the revolutionary spatial perspective of the Italian Renaissance, he meticulously layered tempera and oil upon the wooden panel to complete a sacred narrative of salvation.

This work is The Temptation of Christ, a wing panel from the famous St. Wolfgang Altarpiece located in the Pilgrimage Church of St. Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, created between 1471 and 1481. Officially housed in its original location at the Catholic parish church of St. Wolfgang, the monumental panel stands over two meters in height, exuding the solemn grandeur of the sanctuary.
