This fascinating artwork, completed in 1876 by the representative French Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte, captures a peaceful afternoon on a canvas measuring 95 by 111 centimeters. The sight of women absorbed in sewing and reading in a sun-drenched garden conveys the tranquil daily life of the 19th-century bourgeoisie like a visual poem.

The viewer's gaze upon encountering the painting first lands on the young woman positioned in the immediate left foreground. Her voluminous, light blue-toned dress and her delicate posture, deeply focused on her sewing, firmly anchor the visual center of the canvas.

From the woman in the foreground, the gaze naturally moves toward the two middle-aged women seated around the table in the center of the screen. Clad in dark black dresses and engrossed in their respective handiwork, their presence imparts a calm yet profound sense of stability to the scene.

Afterward, our eyes gently expand past the woman quietly reading a book in the right background, moving toward the flowerbed blooming with vibrant red flowers and the fresh, sunlit garden beyond. This flow of vision—starting from the figures nearby and gradually permeating into the distant landscape—comfortably guides the observer into this quiet, private space.

This serene setting is the summer estate in Yerres, a place dearly loved by the Caillebotte family just outside Paris. The figures depicted in the painting are all members of the artist's family; the young woman in the foreground is his cousin Marie, while his mother and aunt are seated behind her. In contrast to the men of the era who enjoyed active outdoor pursuits like boating or walking, the depiction of women quietly doing needlework under the shade of the awning offers an interesting behind-the-scenes glimpse into the rather restricted daily lives of bourgeois women at the time.

Exhibited at the Third Impressionist Exhibition in 1877, this piece holds a highly significant position in art history today. This is because it actively embraces the brilliant outdoor light characteristic of Impressionism, while simultaneously depicting the forms of the figures and the textures of their clothing with an astonishingly meticulous realism. Caillebotte's outstanding ability to flawlessly combine warm affection for his family with the art of light within a snapshot-like composition continues to receive endless acclaim from later critics.
