# 새에게 모이를 주는 소녀 - Feeding the Bird

Created in the early nineteenth century by an unidentified folk artist, this charming portrait was executed in oil on canvas and measures approximately 61 by 46 centimeters. Currently preserved within collections dedicated to American Folk Art, the painting portrays a young girl in a yellow Empire-waisted dress gently feeding a small bird held in her hands. Rather than employing strict academic perspective, the artist utilized clear outlines and flattened forms, imbuing the composition with the distinctive purity and naive elegance characteristic of period folk portraiture.

During the early nineteenth century, itinerant and folk painters captured the hearts of local communities through their heartfelt and highly decorative likenesses. Images of children interacting with small pets or birds served as popular symbols of innocence, gentle virtue, and domestic harmony. Dressed in her finest outfit complete with delicate coral beads, a bracelet, and a hair comb, the child reflects both maternal affection and the proud status of a loving household. Modern art historians cherish such works for their unpretentious aesthetic appeal and their authentic preservation of historic everyday devotion.

Upon viewing the canvas, the viewer's gaze is immediately drawn to the central encounter between the child's tender hands and the small bird perched carefully upon them. From this delicate interaction, the eye naturally ascends to the girl's bright, earnest eyes, rosy cheeks, and fine jewelry, evoking a warm sense of nostalgia and gentle delight.
