This intimate and deeply atmospheric pastoral composition is preserved in a prestigious private collection.

In his early thirties, defying his family's fierce opposition, Pissarro chose to build a life in the rural countryside with Julie Vellay, who had worked in his family's household. Cut off from financial support and living in acute poverty with their newborn child, Pissarro embraced the land, setting up his easel daily in the open meadows to paint the honest pulse of country life.
