프랑스 인상주의의 위대한 스승이자 인간미 넘치는 관찰자였던 카미유 피사로(Camille Pissarro)가 1881년에 완성한 '밀짚모자를 쓴 시골 소녀(Jeune fille à la paille / Peasant Girl with a Straw Hat)'는 캔버스에 유채(Oil on canvas)로 그려진 대표적인 인물화 걸작입니다. 가로 59.7cm, 세로 73.4cm 크기의 이 작품은 미국 워싱턴 국립 미술관(National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.)에 영구 소장되어 있습니다.

**Peasant Girl with a Straw Hat - Jeune fille à la paille**  
Painted in 1881 by Camille Pissarro, the revered mentor and compassionate soul of French Impressionism, Peasant Girl with a Straw Hat (Jeune fille à la paille) is an oil on canvas masterwork measuring 73.4 by 59.7 cm. This radiant figure painting is permanently preserved in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.  
Behind this captivating canvas lies an intimate domestic story and an essential turning point in Pissarro's artistic evolution. The sitter is believed to be Nélie, a young niece and cherished domestic helper who lived closely with the Pissarro family in Pontoise. While his contemporaries like Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir were capturing the fashionable leisure of the Parisian bourgeoisie, Pissarro stayed firmly dedicated to the honest, grounded rhythm of rural life, portraying the young girl in her modest striped work blouse, blue pinafore, and rustic sun hat.  
Encouraged by his close friend Edgar Degas, Pissarro shifted his focus during this period toward monumental figure studies, experimenting with dense, multi-directional strokes of interwoven pigment. Exhibited at the Seventh Impressionist Exhibition in 1882, the painting received tremendous praise from writer and critic Joris-Karl Huysmans, who admired its ability to fuse the pastoral gravitas of Jean-François Millet with the vibrant optical light of Impressionism. Today, art historians revere this work as the zenith of Pissarro's human portraits, seamlessly celebrating the quiet dignity of agrarian life.  
Upon engaging with the canvas, the spectator's gaze instinctively alights on the warm straw hat with its delicate red ribbon, before resting upon the young girl's pensive profile and sun-touched rosy cheek nestled in soft shade.
