Completed in 1899 and subtly revised in 1906 by Winslow Homer (1836–1910), a towering giant of American Realism, this monumental oil painting is housed in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Rendered in oil on canvas, the dramatic horizontal masterwork measures approximately 71.4 cm in height by 124.8 cm in width.

Homer masterfully depicted the violent dynamism of the open Atlantic by pairing heavy, sculptural impasto with sharp tonal contrasts. The churning, wine-dark swells dominating the foreground are modeled with dense pigments to impart visceral physical mass, heightened by the menacing fins of circling sharks and flecks of bloodied foam. In contrast, the sun-bronzed anatomy of the lone mariner reclining against the dismasted deck is rendered with rich luminosity, while the towering waterspout on the right and the ghostly silhouette of a distant ship on the far horizon establish an immense, atmospheric expanse.
