Created in 1786 by John Trumbull—the paramount painter of the American Revolution—this masterwork captures the tragic loss of General Richard Montgomery during the assault on the Quebec fortress amid a midwinter blizzard in 1775\. Set against a harrowing battlefield churned by snow and cannon smoke, the canvas dramatically records General Montgomery falling fatally wounded, his subordinate officers rushing to support him, and his fallen comrades lying frozen in the foreground. The hero's noble sacrifice on foreign, snowbound soil for his country's liberty infuses the composition with epic grandeur.

While viewers may not consciously realize it, the key visual mechanism that unconsciously draws the eye is a diagonal pyramid framework that originates from the billowing white smoke on the left, moves across the fallen in the lower snow, and converges upon Montgomery’s pale body at the center.
