Completed around 1878 by the great painter encompassing French Impressionism and realism, Gustave Caillebotte, this captivating urban landscape is executed in oil on a canvas measuring 64 by 81 centimeters. Instead of the bustling, vibrant streets of Paris, it uniquely captures the snow-covered rooftop scenery of Paris sleeping in the chilly winter air through an original perspective.

The viewer's gaze, upon confronting the painting, first lands on the intricate forms of the snow-laden roofs and heavy chimneys that massively occupy the lower section of the canvas. The texture of the white snow and the cold gray slate roofs, expressed through both rough and meticulous brushstrokes, firmly anchor the visual center of the composition and instantly draw the observer's senses into the heart of winter.

Lingering on the vivid rooftop scenery of the foreground, the gaze naturally moves gently upward, following the clusters of buildings and chimneys in the middle ground that recede into layers behind. As the eyes deeply permeate along the muted color variations of low saturation, the calm and quiet stillness of a winter day hidden beneath the glamorous facade of the city opens up a profound space of peace and contemplation in the viewer's mind.

Finally, our eyes softly settle on the hazy skyline near the distant horizon at the very top of the canvas and the sky embracing the cold winter atmosphere. This expansion of vision—extending from the textured roofs close at hand to the fading cityscape in the distance—grants a cozy sense of presence, as if the viewer were standing right at a high window or balcony overlooking a winter morning in Paris.

This work was produced during a period when Caillebotte was creating a series of urban landscapes viewed from the heights of Haussmann-style apartments in Paris. Unlike his Impressionist peers who primarily focused on outdoor scenes under brilliant sunlight or entertainment venues, he sought to capture both the desolation and beauty of the modern city through the snowy scenery of cold, uninhabited rooftops. It was an innovative attempt to elevate the private space of everyday life where the artist's own gaze lingered into the realm of art.

Today, art historians highly evaluate this rooftop series as one of Caillebotte's most original achievements. His exceptional descriptive power, which perfectly recreates the air and temperature of a winter city through only the subtle harmony of white, gray, and blue tones, receives acclaim for transcending the grammar of traditional landscape painting and expanding the horizons of modern visual art.
