Rendered in oil on canvas, the piece measures approximately 61.6 cm in height by 97.2 cm in width.

Homer masterfully captured the charged atmosphere of an impending storm against a setting sun by balancing heavy impasto textures with nuanced translucent glazes. The jagged coastal ledges of Maine dominating the lower half are sculpted with dense, earthy pigments to establish immense physical permanence, contrasted by the dynamic white spray breaking across the stones. Above, the setting sun casting soft rose and amber glazes across the heavy bruised clouds evokes an extraordinary harmony between natural volatility and twilight tranquility.

The setting depicted is Saco Bay near Homer’s isolated cliffside sanctuary at Prouts Neck, Maine.
