Created in 1873 by Winslow Homer (1836–1910), a master of American Realism, this lyrical oil painting is housed in the permanent collection of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art in Iowa. Executed in oil on canvas, the piece measures approximately 34.3 cm in height by 50.8 cm in width.

Homer masterfully captured the gentle summer sunlight filtering through lush garden foliage against a deep verdant backdrop. The folds and ruffled tiers of the young girl's crisp white linen dress are rendered with vibrant impasto touches that lend sculptural presence, while the surrounding greenery is subdued in deep, cool tones to create a striking luminous contrast that brings the central figure into sharp relief.
