# The Silent Exhalation of the Earth, Ploughed Fields

Painted in September 1888 during the triumphant peak of his Arles period by Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890), Ploughed Fields (also known as Ploughed Fields on the Plain of La Crau) is an oil on canvas measuring 72.5 cm × 92.5 cm (28.5 in × 36.4 in), preserved in the permanent collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

## Autumn Solitude on the Crau Plain: Preparing the Soil for Rebirth

In the early autumn of 1888, following the completion of the golden summer harvest, the vast plain of La Crau surrounding Arles transformed into a quiet theater of renewal. Escaping the noise of the town, Van Gogh set up his easel amidst the expansive flatlands, where local farmers were breaking and turning the earth for future sowings. He found profound visual and spiritual beauty in the austere quietude of the open soil.

Elevating the horizon line near the upper edge of the canvas, Vincent devoted the vast majority of the pictorial space to the rugged physicality of the upturned earth. In the far distance along the horizon, a ploughman with his horse team, modest white-walled farmhouses, and slender poplars appear as delicate silhouettes against the sweeping expanse. Writing to his brother Theo, Vincent described the serenity of rendering the ploughed fields under a blue sky adorned with white clouds, capturing the meditative balance of nature in rest. The painting stands as a reverent homage to agricultural continuity and the unadorned truth of rural life.

## Psychological Trajectory of the Gaze and Subconscious Expansion

The observer’s subconscious gaze is immediately welcomed by the textured terrain undulating across the lower foreground. Rendered in rhythmic, sculptural strokes of ochre, soft taupe, and subtle violet undertones, this dynamic earthen foreground instills an instinctive feeling of tactile grounding and spatial stability.

Visual perception then glides past the crisp geometric wedge of vibrant green clover on the right, traversing the expansive diagonal furrows toward the distant horizon. Upon discovering the diminutive figure of the ploughman steadily guiding his team through the vast field, the viewer internalizes the quiet, harmonious scale of human endeavor within the infinite landscape.

The gaze ascends past the red-roofed cottages to float among the buoyant, tactile white clouds scattered across a luminous azure sky. Balancing the warm, understated neutrality of the soil with the cool expanses of sky and meadow, the observer absorbs a profound sensation of psychological breathing room, pastoral silence, and timeless calm.

## Spatial Modernism and the Poetry of Soil: Critical Significance

Art historians revere Ploughed Fields as an exceptional triumph of Van Gogh’s spatial ingenuity, demonstrating his ability to modernize classical landscape traditions.

By allowing the vast diagonal expanse of the ground to dominate the composition, Vincent reinterpreted the expansive skies of 17th-century Dutch masters through the decorative flattened perspectives of Japanese woodblock prints. Relying on sophisticated chromatic subtleties rather than aggressive color dissonance, this masterwork captures the organic pulse of the earth, standing as an enduring monument to Van Gogh's profound communion with the natural world.
