알프스의 차가운 산바람이 거칠게 스며드는 티롤 지방의 외딴 공방에서, 미하엘 파허는 1479년부터 1481년 사이에 이 제단화 패널을 제작했습니다.

오스트리아 잘츠캄머구트의 성 볼프강 가톨릭 성당에 소장된 성 볼프강 제단화의 날개 패널 중 하나인 이 작품의 공식 명칭은 그리스도의 세례입니다.

# The Baptism of Christ

Michael Pacher created this altarpiece panel between 1479 and 1481 in a remote workshop in the Tyrol region, where the cold alpine mountain winds blew harshly.

Housed in the Catholic parish church of St. Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, this work is a wing panel of the St. Wolfgang Altarpiece titled The Baptism of Christ.

The actual physical dimensions of the wooden panel measure 173 cm in height and 140.5 cm in width.

The artist, striving to graft the spatial perspective of the Italian Renaissance onto the heavy traditions of Northern Gothic art, layered tempera and oil upon a wooden panel to complete a sacred narrative of salvation.

## The Artist's Struggle and Behind-the-Scenes

In the immediate foreground at the center, Christ stands in the river clad only in a white cloth with His hands clasped, receiving baptism with a calm expression, while to His right, John the Baptist kneels in a red garment, pouring water from a pitcher onto His head.
