Executed around 1838–1840 by John Trumbull—the master painter of American Revolutionary history—this monumental religious and aesthetic work depicts the tragic demise of the "last human family" left on Earth during Noah's Flood, as chronicled in the biblical book of Genesis (7:4–24). Set beneath a dark sky torn by lightning and amid relentless, raging waves, the artist delicately conveys human helplessness and raw pathos before divine judgment through a doomed family clinging to the final outcrop of rock.

While viewers may not consciously realize it, the key visual mechanism that unconsciously draws the eye is a steep, descending diagonal axis that originates from the agonizingly outstretched hand of the old man on the upper right, passes through the mother and child in the center, and plunges toward the inverted body of the youth tumbling into the sea on the lower left. In the upper right of the canvas, the dramatic posture of the elderly man wailing toward the lightning-streaked sky serves as an arresting emotional point of origin for the viewer's subconscious gaze. The line of sight glides downward along his arm and gaze, pauses at the supple, elegant contours of the mother gazing gently at the infant in her arms, and finally tumbles precipitously toward the lower left corner following the pale, contorted form of the young man swept headfirst into the surge.

This subconscious downward trajectory allows the viewer to physically experience the extreme despair and fading of human life in the face of an overwhelming saga of divine retribution.
