Completed by the master of French history painting and romanticism, Léon Cogniet, this striking drawing captures the final moments of fellow painter Théodore Géricault lying on his sickbed with a delicate and affectionate gaze. Eschewing flamboyant colors, it is a masterwork that precisely portrays the unbroken spirit and deep interior of an artist facing death solely through refined pencil lines.

The viewer's gaze, upon confronting the painting, is immediately and powerfully drawn to Géricault's emaciated yet resolute face, resting obliquely at the upper portion of the canvas while casting a deep and cool gaze toward the observer as if staring right back. The meticulous depiction of the subject's facial features while wearing a cap and leaning against the sickbed firmly commands the visual center of the entire composition.

Lingering on the intense impression of the face, the gaze naturally flows downward along the collar of the hospital gown and the neatly folded folds of the attire. The honest linear depiction without exaggeration vividly conveys the solemn and calm dignity of an artist confronting the final moments of life.

Finally, our eyes permeate into the abyss of black-and-white shading and negative space that softly spreads around the figure, enveloping them. The background, which settles subtly without fully revealing its form, draws the viewer into deep contemplation and awe before the death of a great giant.

The subject of this work, Théodore Géricault, was a genius painter who opened the doors to French romantic painting through *The Raft of the Medusa* and a close companion who shared a deep exchange with Léon Cogniet during the same era. Cogniet's affection and respect for Géricault just before he passed away from chronic illness in 1824 are preserved stroke by stroke within this drawing. The artist's attitude, striving to sincerely record the image of a friend who did not lose his artistic pride even amidst the shadow of death, delivers profound emotion.

Today, art historians evaluate this work as a precious heritage demonstrating Léon Cogniet's exceptional drawing prowess and deep psychological insight into subjects. His outstanding descriptive capability, which perfectly recreates human sublimity and the weight of life solely through restrained pencil lines rather than flamboyant oil paints, is remembered as the standard of great portrait art that resonates with the inner self of viewers across the ages.
