(Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts)에 영구 소장되어 있습니다.

# A Blazing Hymn to the Earth and Sacred Labor, The Red Vineyard

Painted in early November 1888 in Arles by Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890), *The Red Vineyard* (also known as *The Red Vineyard at Arles*) is an oil on canvas measuring 75.0 cm × 93.0 cm (29.5 in × 36.6 in), preserved in the permanent collection of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, Russia.

## Autumn Radiance in Arles: The Legend of the Only Lifetime Sale

During the golden autumn of 1888, while living alongside Paul Gauguin at the Yellow House in Arles, Van Gogh took a walk toward the Montmajour abbey and encountered a vineyard drenched in late afternoon rain, glowing with incandescent reds, purples, and amber yellows. Encouraged by Gauguin to paint from imagination and memory rather than direct outdoor observation, Vincent returned to his studio to recreate the luminous vision.

Writing to his brother Theo, Vincent described the awe-inspiring sight of a whole red vineyard beneath a pale green sky, with golden reflections glistening upon the rain-soaked paths. Historically, *The Red Vineyard* holds a singular and monumental distinction as the only painting definitively sold during Van Gogh’s lifetime. In early 1890, at the annual exhibition of *Les XX* in Brussels, the Belgian painter and patron Anna Boch acquired the masterpiece for 400 francs, which eventually entered the legendary collection of Sergei Shchukin before finding its home in the Pushkin Museum.

## Visual Trajectory and the Subconscious Pulse of Light

The observer’s gaze is immediately seized by the blinding, incandescent solar disc blazing in the upper right quadrant. From this celestial epicenter of radiant light, visual perception flows effortlessly down the golden trail of solar reflections mirrored across the glistening riverbank.

The eye then sweeps across the shimmering, violet-tinged earth and navigates through the rhythmic diagonal arrangement of laborers harvesting the late autumn crop. The fierce chromatic vibration between the smoldering vermilion vines and the cool cobalt frocks worn by the peasants creates an intense optical dynamism. Beneath conscious awareness, the viewer internalizes the tactile heat of the earth and the timeless sanctity of human labor, harmonizing with the artist's profound reverence for the harvest.

## Beyond Mimesis: The Triumph of Memory and Color in Modern Art

Art historians celebrate *The Red Vineyard* as a magnificent triumph of Synthetism and Post-Impressionist innovation. By allowing emotional memory to govern composition and emancipating color from literal imitation, Van Gogh transformed a rustic harvest into a universal spiritual landscape.

The dense, undulating impasto and the expressive power of complementary hues anticipated the emergence of Fauvism, establishing a radical precedent for modern color theory. Standing as an enduring monument to human resilience and natural abundance, this canvas remains one of the most triumphant, emotionally uplifting achievements in the history of Western art.
