미국 사실주의와 해양 회화의 독보적인 거장 윈슬로 호머(Winslow Homer, 1836–1910)가 1895년에 완성하고 1901년에 재작업을 거쳐 최종 완성한 유화 최고 걸작입니다. 현재 미국 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 미술관(The Metropolitan Museum of Art)에 소장되어 있으며, 캔버스 위에 유채(Oil on canvas)로 제작된 실제 크기는 세로 87.6cm, 가로 127cm의 웅장한 대작입니다.

Completed in 1895 and powerfully reworked in 1901 by Winslow Homer (1836–1910), a monumental titan of American Realism and marine art, this iconic oil painting is housed in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Rendered in oil on canvas, the dramatic horizontal masterwork measures approximately 87.6 cm in height by 127 cm in width.

Homer masterfully captured the raw kinetic fury of the Atlantic surf crashing against the coastline through dense, sculptural impasto and decisive brushwork. The towering plume of white foam detonating on the left was built with rich, layered applications of lead white and pearlescent grays, lending immense physical mass to the spray. In grounded contrast, the dark ledges of Maine granite cutting across the lower edge are sculpted in deep umber, charcoal, and bruised purple tones, while the translucent seawater rushing down the rocky crevasses is articulated with fluid glazes, celebrating the eternal clash between fluid momentum and stoic permanence.
