미국 사실주의 미술의 독보적인 거장 윈슬로 호머(Winslow Homer, 1836–1910)가 남북전쟁이 종전된 해인 1865년에 완성한 역사적 유화 명작입니다. 현재 미국 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 미술관(The Metropolitan Museum of Art)에 소장되어 있으며, 캔버스 위에 유채(Oil on canvas)로 제작된 실제 크기는 세로 61.3cm, 가로 96.8cm의 가로형 파노라마 규격입니다.

Completed in 1865 by Winslow Homer (1836–1910), a monumental titan of American Realism, this historic oil masterpiece is preserved in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Rendered in oil on canvas, the balanced panoramic work measures approximately 61.3 cm in height by 96.8 cm in width.

Homer skillfully captured the radiant vitality of a bountiful harvest and the clear atmospheric light of a new dawn by pairing confident, textured brushwork with sharp chromatic contrast. The vast wall of ripe, golden wheat stretching across the horizon is sculpted with rich, impasto layers of ochre, amber, and raw sienna. The sweeping arc of the scythe slicing through the stalks is registered with dynamic economy, while the brilliant ultramarine sky provides an invigorating complementary counterpoint to the golden field, throwing the solid silhouette of the solitary harvester into monumental relief.

An extraordinary historical narrative surrounds the canvas: resting half-hidden in the dry stubble at the lower right are the soldier's discarded canteen and Union regulation jacket.
