Positioned at the lower center of the canvas is a dramatic confrontation: Major General Joseph Warren of the Continental Army lies fatally wounded, a British soldier thrusts his bayonet toward him, and Major John Small of the British Army physically intervenes to stay the weapon. The horror of war, a chivalrous humanity that transcends victory or defeat, and the aura of noble sacrifice for the nascent United States overpower the entire scene.

While viewers may not consciously realize it, the key visual mechanism that unconsciously draws the eye is a powerful X-shaped dynamic composition that originates from the fluttering flags in the upper left, converges upon General Warren’s white shirt at the center, and radiates outward into the flames on the right.
