Completed in 1877 by Winslow Homer (1836–1910), a paramount figure in American Realism, this monumental oil painting is preserved in the permanent collection of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Rendered in oil on canvas, the panoramic piece measures approximately 61.6 cm in height by 97.2 cm in width.

Homer masterfully balanced spontaneous plein-air vigor with meticulous natural observation to portray the untamed wilderness of New York's Adirondack Mountains. The rich tapestry of wild ferns, fallen logs, and autumnal shrubs across the hillside is enlivened with dynamic impasto in crimson, gold, and earthy viridian tones. In the background, the imposing mountain crest and billowing clouds are softly modeled with atmospheric perspective, while the younger guide’s vibrant red wool shirt provides a striking complementary contrast against the cool alpine slopes.

The subjects depicted are real-life Adirondack wilderness legends. Standing on the left is the tall, resolute young guide Charles Gibson, while the bearded veteran on the right, equipped with a pack basket and pointing toward the distant summit, is Orson 'Old Mountain' Phelps, a beloved philosopher of the woods celebrated for blazing trails across the High Peaks.

Homer forged a deep kinship with these guides while camping near Keene Valley, seeking retreat from the metropolitan art world. A colorful anecdote recounts that Phelps was a delightfully eccentric woodsman who openly disdained the rigid conventions of modern society, frequently regaling Homer with his poetic philosophy that wilderness summits were nature’s grandest hymns.
